Drama
Through the Drama curriculum, students explore many areas of the subject, developing their basic skills and knowledge. The curriculum also teaches students how to work in particular practitioners’ styles, such as; Stanislavski and Brecht.
Students are able to draw upon and build on their experiences and use many transferable skills from school life to their social life during the devising process of their work and consider how the impacts of the world around them develop inspiration and topics they engage in. This gives students ownership of their learning and aids in not only their acting skills but also supports their confidence building, improves problem-solving skills and critical thinking skills. Students develop the exploring aspect to their work and devise a final performance piece which they share with parents, visitors and other students at the end of their class unit.
Music
Music plays an integral role to life at Uptown. The department has superb facilities for ensemble and individual performance, as well as fully equipped classrooms and rehearsal rooms.
From Classical to Musicals, African to Arabic, pupils are immersed in music from various genres, styles and traditions and are encouraged to explore, analyse and reflect upon all that they listen to. The Music curriculum allows pupils to perform and compose as well as develop their music technology skills. Pupils can also access private instrumental lessons which are provided in collaboration with the specialist instrumental tutors at Dubai Performing Arts.
There are many extra-curricular activities for pupils to participate in such as Choir, Rock Band, Orchestra and Secondary Production Band. Beyond the classroom, a number of formal and informal performance opportunities showcase the talents of our pupils. Events such as the Inter-House Music Competition, Live Lounges and the Winter Concert are firm favourites of our musicians and performers!
Dance
Our Dance opportunities continue to rise in popularity every year. The highly recognised Dubai Desert Dance programme is now in its tenth year in Dubai an event which has 500 students involved across Dubai school and has over 100 students from UIS auditioning across both the primary and secondary schools each year, with the standard of Dance being stronger each year. An additional element to this programme sees students getting involved with the crew aspect of a project of this scale including back stage crew, costume & set design and technical aspects of performance.
Performances
Performances at Uptown are a regular occurrence, students from Grades 6-12 are given the opportunity to participate in whole school productions, winter concert, live lounge, Sunday morning music, Desert Dance, curriculum unit performances, and so many more.
